In cases of early loss of primary teeth, space maintainers are appliances used in order to keep the space open and allow the permanent teeth to erupt properly in the jaw arch. 

In the case of a lost molar tooth while having a normal arch length, the principal is using a space maintainer. If space maintainers are not used after the early loss of primary teeth, improperly erupted permanent teeth might need further orthodontic treatment.
